There are two Capybaras that live in the Villarrica park. Mandy is the friendly people person who mingles with visitors. The second capy is more the stoic, rugged individualist type who only hangs out in a swampy patch of ground that’s inaccessible to humans.

You can see this maverick mammal below, as the sovereign Capybara basks in the sun.

Did you know that the English word “Maverick” comes from a person?

Samuel Augustus Maverick, to be precise.

Maverick refused to brand his cattle because he didn’t want to hurt them. And the term “Maverick” was eventually adopted as short-hand for “Someone who exhibits a streak of stubborn independence.”
