The High Lonesome

Visiting San Martin de los Andes

In partnership with

I’m a big fan of Louis L'Amour novels, most of which are incorrectly classified as “Westerns.” Last of the Breed, for example, is set in 1980’s Siberia.

Many of these books take place in forest and mountain environments. Lands untouched by civilization. I bring this up because maybe its the topography or maybe its the gaucho culture, but there are many parts of Argentina where it feels like you’ve stepped out of the present and into the historical setting of a Louis L'Amour novel.

As an example, last fall, I went on vacation with my parents (wonderful people) to San Martin de los Andes.

This is a small town that’s popular with skiers due to the surrounding mountains.

But, it’s also a region of incredible natural beauty.

Here are some pictures of the landscape…

San Martin de los Andes is on the edge of Lake Lacar, which is an absolutely spectacular body of water.

And while there aren’t any Capybaras in this part of Argentina, there were a lot of wild (or at the very least, extremely free range) animals.

Here are some goats that were foraging around one of the mountains…

And here’s a cow on the mountain!

There’s a waterfall hiking distance from town, and this is the forest it’s located in…

Hiking to falls felt very much like being in the proverbial “High Lonesome” of a Louis L'Amour novel. A place in nature where you’re far removed from society. Of course, the town of San Martin de los Andes was within walking distance. But out in the woods, it felt like being someplace untouched by civilization.

The falls and the river they’re a part of were absolutely beautiful. But, the river had some of the coldest water I’ve ever felt! Still, it was an incredible sight and unforgettable expirience.

San Martin de los Andes is a wonderful town situated in an amazingly beautiful part of the world. And if you’re ever interested in seeing a part of Argentina with sweeping views and breathtaking vistas, this is definitely worth a visit.
