With winter ending in the Southern Hemisphere and the weather warming up, all kinds of animals are out and about now. Parakeets, moths, and bats are common sights.

Paraguay is an interesting country because you often stumble on animals that appear out of place. While going for an early morning walk, I once startled a horse that had fallen asleep in somebody’s yard. There are chickens and ducks foraging around city streets. And while on a recent walk near the center of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay’s second-largest city, I spotted this "Yacare Caiman" relaxing in the park.

Yacare caiman are a relative of the crocodile and are native to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. These caiman are typically found in wetlands and nature preserves, so it was neat to see one in an urban environment.
