Sleepy Sunday
A Very Nautical Email
Scientists say that between 3 AM and 4 AM, the human body reaches its lowest point in a 24-hour cycle. This is when guards, lookouts, and sentries are most likely to fall asleep.
To counter this, old-time seafaring vessels developed a special form of timekeeping: a ship’s bell would ring every half hour, increasing in number until it reached “eight bells,” helping to keep night watchmen alert.
Captains also used a “dog watch,” a shortened shift designed to bring fresh sailors on deck and prevent fatigue from setting in.
It’s a good thing 19th-century adventurers didn’t have a “Capybara watch,” because this bleary-eyed bara looks about ready to fall asleep in the middle of the afternoon!

Did You Know…
Unsinkable Sam, also known as Oskar, was a cat who survived three shipwrecks.
He was originally aboard the German battleship Bismarck when it was sunk. After being rescued, he went on to survive the sinking of HMS Cossack and later HMS Ark Royal. Following his third shipwreck, Sam was retired to shore duty, where he lived out the rest of his life until 1955.
Thanks for reading and have a great Sunday!
