Quest For The Golden Capybara
The CapyTube Video That Never Was
About a year ago, I took a trip to Londrina, Brazil.
I knew very little about this city, except that they had several large statues of Capybaras. And where there’s a monument to the world’s largest rodent, there must be the real thing as well. Right?

Well, Londrina turned out to be a very nice city. And “Parque Arthur Thomas” does have several large statues of Capybaras, which you can see below:

Unfortunately, there weren’t any Capybaras at the park. And talking with some locals, I learned that many of the capys had migrated out of town.

There was a waterfall at the edge of the city, and a lot of coatis were hanging out near the falls. Also, while hiking through the woods, a capuchin monkey followed me.
If you are a nature lover, there’s plenty of wildlife here. Just not capys.
Still determined to see Capybaras, I hopped on a bus and visited the nearby city of Apucarana, which has a lot of Capybaras. The local park had dozens of capys grazing together.

And, there’s a lake called “Lago Jaboti” with a lagoon area that had even more Capybaras hanging out.

Londrina is a very nice city and could make for an interesting pitstop if you were on a road trip from Sao Paulo to Foz do Iguacu. And while you might not see capys in the city itself, there are several nearby towns with an abundance of Capybaras.
