Mogi das Cruzes Capybaras

A Nice Park Outside Sao Paulo

In partnership with

Despite being the fourth-largest city in the world, there’s plenty of greenery and open space just outside Sao Paulo. Travel less than an hour from the city, and you’ll find fields, forests, mountains, and sweeping landscapes.

Mogi das Cruzes is one of my favorite getaways. About an hour by train from downtown Sao Paulo, it offers fresh air and room to breathe.

Best of all, Mogi das Cruzes is home to Japanese Immigration Centennial Park, a place teeming with wildlife, from chickens and peacocks to Capybaras and marmosets.

Here’s a mother capy guiding her little ones along the forest’s edge.

And here are the Capybaras retreating into the woodland, likely headed for a secluded riverbank hidden among the trees.

The Arctic gets its name from the Greek word arktos, meaning “bear,” referring to the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor (the Great and Little Bear) visible in the northern sky. The Antarctic literally means “opposite the bear,” fitting since no native land bears live there.
