See this ordinary Capybara laying down and grazing?

This may not look like anything out of the ordinary. But, this Capybara attracted an enormous crowd (cropped out of frame for privacy’s sake) who were “oohing and ahhing” as they ogled this gentle grazer.

You see, Curitiba recently hosted the “The Songahm Pan American Taekwondo Championship,” an event that brought 2,000 international competitors to Barigui Park.

Many of these martial artists had never seen a Capybara before.

And they were excited to spot one grazing the park.

It reminded me of an article I once read about how Parisians rarely visit the Eiffel Tower, and New Yorkers seldom tour the Statue of Liberty. Sometimes the most extraordinary treasures are right in our own backyard, so familiar that we forget how special they are.
