Do like The Weeknd’s music?

I’ve always appreciated the singer’s ability to create “Troll Billboard Hits,” if that’s even a term.

Many of his chart-toppers feel like pranks on casual listeners. Songs that sound harmless or generic but carry much darker undertones. “Can’t Feel My Face,” for example, was a number-one pop hit that played like a standard love song. I heard it as boarding music on an airplane once. Yet, the song is actually about drug addiction.

“Blinding Lights” is another troll hit. On the surface, it’s a song about driving fast through a city. But it’s preceded on the album by a song called “Faith,” which ends with the lines, “I ended up in the back of a flashing car / With the city shining on my face / The lights are blinding me again.” The implication being that singer has either been arrested or wheeled into an ambulance.

Watching this Capybara graze alongside a police car with its flashing lights, the blues and reds dazzlingly bright in the misty air, reminded of that line.

The Capybara, of course, was indifferent.
