How Sharp Are Capybara Teeth?

Plus Capybara Dentistry!

A Capybara’s front teeth never stop growing.

And capys often try to wear their own teeth down to a manageable length. Constant grazing usually helps with this. But sometimes Capybaras will take more drastic measures.

Capybaras will chew on bark, roots, and even rocks if their teeth are getting too long.

Here’s a picture I snapped of Mandy chewing on the edge of a stone.

And here’s Mandy again after she chewed through a wooden fence rail…

In Brazil, when capys want to manage their teeth, they often graze in the woods and chew through overgrowth. For example, this Capybara who was eating an enormous plant!

The CapyTube Merch Store Proudly Presents:

How Sharp Are Capybara Teeth?

Capys have big, powerful teeth. And their chompers are often described as “sharp” or “chisel-like.”

Like an 18th Century scientist, I decided to conduct an experiment, using myself as the test subject. While hand-feeding Mandy, I let her run her teeth across my palm.

Surprise of all surprises, her teeth were sharp!

The palm of my hand felt like it had razor burn for at least an hour afterwards — and that was from light content with her teeth.

Capybaras are friendly and I’ve never seen a capy intentionally try to hurt anyone. But if you’re going to a park or someplace that lets you feed these wonderful creatures, use a little caution around their teeth.

Exercise a little commonsense safety, and feeding Capybaras is an incredible and fun expirience.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!
