Getting Close To A Completely Wild Capy Family
Babies Frolic, Parents Graze
At 1.4 million square meters, Barigui Park is huge.
Sometimes it’s possible to stumble on wild Capybaras who have little to no interaction with humans. This is especially true of either pregnant capys, who are nesting, or families with small babies.
While hiking around the park, I spotted a large group of capys hanging out near the forest’s edge. Many of them were cute, tiny babies.
As soon as they noticed me, they bolted for the woods.

If you’ve ever wondered why so many CapyTube videos contain books, it’s because filming capys is often a slow process. So, I usually bring a paperback with me.
Case in point, I wanted to get some footage of these capys but I needed them wait until they were comfortable with me sitting nearby and watching them. Fortunately, I had a book with me, so I sat quietly and read for a good hour or so.

While I read, the Capybaras played. Here are the babies running and rolling around.

Finally, I decided to test my luck and move a little closer…
It’s a good thing Capybaras don’t have opposable thumbs, because they’d make excellent chessmasters. These parents used the marshland as a moat, grazing up front in ankle-deep water while their babies stayed safely behind. Any intruder would have to slog through the muck before getting close.

It took time for the capys to get used to my presence. Once they realized I wasn’t a threat, they allowed me to approach. But, they remained one step ahead, strategically positioning their babies out of reach on the far side of the marsh.

Did You Know…
According to scientist and mathematician Claude Shannon, there are more possible games of chess than atoms in the observable universe. Shannon estimated 10^120 possible chess games while the universe contains approximately 10^80 atoms.
