Do Capybaras Have Hands?
Answering This Popular Question
If you ever want to play a fun prank on a raccoon, give the raccoon a sugar cube.
Raccoons like to dip their food in water before they eat it, and it befuddles them when the sugar cube they’re gripping disappears before their very eyes!
I think I learned this from reading the Sterling North book Rascal as a kid.
Raccoons are quite dexterous and can use their hand-like paws to grab objects, pick things up, and even open latches.
Which leads to a common Capybara question…
Do Capybaras have hands, paws, or webbed feet?
Here’s a capy’s foot…

Capybaras have slightly-webbed feet with four toes on their front feet and three toes on their back feet!

Animals Imported To Another Country Because Of Fictional Works
Here’s an interesting fact, Sterling North’s book Rascal was adapted into a Japanese anime called Araiguma Rasukaru. This anime was so popular that it led to 1,500 actual raccoons being imported to Japan.
Another interesting fact?
A man named Eugene Schieffelin tried to populate the United States with as many of Shakespeare's birds as possible. In the 1890’s, Eugene Schieffelin released 60 European starlings into New York's Central Park. These 60 birds multiplied. And today, the USA is home to over 200 million European starlings!
Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!
