But Marmosets Do!

Wild Capybaras are surprisingly picky eaters. They don’t like people food, and they don’t even like vegetables that are outside of their typical diet. For example, the wild capys in Barigui Park won’t eat lettuce or carrots.

And while Capybaras don’t like or want people food, marmosets do!

If wild marmosets see a person eating in the park, they’ll often come over and beg for food. Case in point, this cute marmoset that wanted a French Fry,,,

If a human eats grass, they wouldn’t get much caloric value from it. This is due to the fact that grass is high in cellulose and the human body cannot digest cellulose.

However, many herbivores, including Capybaras, have special digestive systems that allow them to process cellulose. For example, Capybaras have a large cecum (intestinal pouch) which ferments cellulose and enables capys to maximize the nutritional value of the grass they eat.
