One piece of furniture per month. That’s the interior decorating plan I’m currently on. Last month it was a sofa for the living room, a huge improvement over lying on the floor to read.

The house did come with cabinets, though they were so old and rickety they looked like props from a low-budget horror film titled The Haunted Kitchen. It also came with a desk best described as “perfect for thrill-seekers,” since using it was a gamble as to whether the whole thing might implode.

The cabinets were so creaky the owner actually replaced them during the closing negotiation. No such luck with the desk.

Yesterday morning I finished work and was about to head out when I suddenly decided to move my beloved CapyTube Zodiac Mug off the desk.

Good call.

While I was out, the desk collapsed.

Luckily, nothing of value was damaged. The desktop landed on the chair beneath it, staying upright and sparing my laptop a nasty fall.

Most important of all, the mug was safe and sound on the dining room table. Had it still been on the desk, it would undoubtedly have crashed to the floor and been smashed to smithereens.

As Cormac McCarthy once said: “You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.”
