A Languorous Lounger

Interesting Math Facts Too!

“Sell in May and go away.” That’s an old Wall Street adage.

Historically, only about 1% of the S&P 500’s annual gains occur during the summer months. That may no longer be the case, but in the “ye olde days,” people spent more time on vacation and outdoor activities, which meant less shopping and lower workplace productivity.

If you ever ran a hobby blog or worked in ecommerce before smartphones took over, there’s a good chance you noticed a major slowdown in traffic during the summer.

The same effect often appears on Fridays, which are traditionally one of the worst days of the week to publish new content. Audience engagement drops as people rush to finish work before the weekend or shift their attention to upcoming plans.

If you took time out of your day to read this email, thank you.

Lucky Numbers

“13” is considered an unlucky number in many cultures. In fact, tall buildings often skip a 13th floor entirely. Other numbers are viewed as lucky, such as 7 in many Western cultures or 8 in parts of Asia.

Regardless of your personal beliefs, certain numbers can appear or repeat more frequently than others. Perhaps this is where many numerical superstitions began.

When playing the lottery, many people choose numbers tied to meaningful dates, like birthdays or anniversaries. But according to some statisticians, choosing numbers above 31 reduces your chances of having to split a jackpot, since most people limit their selections to calendar dates.

Likewise, today’s fun fact comes from statistical probability and was described in Mensa Guide to Casino Gambling by A. Brisman. It’s a useful nugget that can give you an edge in many non-casino games as well, including family-friendly board games.

The most common sum rolled with two standard six-sided dice is 7. It occurs 6 times out of 36 possible combinations (simplified to 1 in 6).

Here are the six different ways to roll a 7 with a pair of dice:

(1, 6), (2, 5), (3, 4), (4, 3), (5, 2), (6, 1).

Now you know where to build a hotel the next time you’re playing Monopoly with friends!
